~Bec McMaster’s website
Bec McMaster writes steamy steampunk romance novels. Known for her London Steampunk Series (5 books and 2 Novellas), she has created a world that readers fall into and get enthralled with. Set in 1800s London, her world is divided into the Echelon who are the rich and powerful upper class nobles who run England, and the lower classes made up of humans, mecs, and rogues. The Echelon is made up of blue-bloods, who are vampires created using a virus. In order to become a blue-blood the Nobel males go through an application process to make sure they will be strong enough to handle the virus. Now women are not allowed to become a blue-blood. Women pretty much have one choice in the Echelon, to be taken on by a blue-blood as a thrall, who are there to give the blue-bloods blood. Thralls are taken care of well, and a blue-blood usually has more than one thrall. Rogues are illegally made blue-bloods. Bec’s hero is a rogue named Blade, or the Devil of Whitechapple, who fights against the corruption of the Echelon. Blade’s book is Kiss of Steel.
There are other groups within Bec’s world, but I don’t want to give everything away. You have to read the series. Her storytelling is beautiful, visually detailed, and entertaining. I loved falling into her world with each book and each book built further her plot and conflicts. Her world is different and refreshing, and was my introduction into the world of steampunk.
Synopsis:Honoria Todd has no choice. Only in the dreaded Whitechapel district can she escape the long reach of the Duke of Vickers. But seeking refuge there will put her straight into the hands of Blade, legendary master of the rookeries. No one would dare cross him, but what price would he demand to keep her safe?
Ever since Vickers infected him with the craving, Blade has been quicker, stronger, almost immortal—and terrified of losing control of the monster within. Honoria could be his perfect revenge against the duke…or the salvation he never dared to dream of.
Review: (reviewed before I started my blog so it is a lot shorter of a review). Oh my goodness! I couldn’t put it down. It was fast paced, great characters, never dull, awesome story! Loved it!
Tarnished Knight (Novella 1.5)
Synopsis: After a vicious vampire attack left him struggling to leash the dark urges of the craving virus, John ‘Rip’ Doolan, thinks he’s finally starting to master the darkness within. The only thing that threatens to shatter his hard-won control is Esme, his closest friend and the only woman he’s ever wanted. If the stubborn beauty ever realised precisely what was going through his mind, their friendship would be ruined…
For six months Esme has waited for Rip to recover and take her as his thrall, not daring to hope for more. Too afraid to put her heart on the line, she’s devastated when Rip reveals that he never had any intentions of making her his.
But when a savage gang of Slashers start causing havoc in Whitechapel, Rip and Esme have no choice. They must face up to the depth of the passion that burns between them and forge a new relationship… or risk losing each other forever.
Review: (I read this one before I started my blog, so it is a super short review that I posted to Goodreads) Loved it. I have fallen in love with this author and her way of telling stories. the plot, characters, setting, and dialect she uses has just sucked me into her world.
Synopsis: In Victorian London, if you’re not a blue blood of the Echelon then you’re nothing at all. The Great Houses rule the city with an iron fist, imposing their strict ‘blood taxes’ on the nation, and the Queen is merely a puppet on a string…
Lena Todd makes the perfect spy. Nobody suspects the flirtatious debutante could be a sympathizer for the humanist movement haunting London’s vicious blue blood elite. Not even the ruthless Will Carver, the one man she can’t twist around her little finger, and the one man whose kiss she can’t forget…
Stricken with the loupe and considered little more than a slave-without-a-collar to the blue bloods, Will wants nothing to do with the Echelon or the dangerous beauty who drives him to the very edge of control. But when he finds a coded letter on Lena—a code that matches one he saw on a fire-bombing suspect—he realizes she’s in trouble. To protect her, he must seduce the truth from her.
With the humanists looking to start a war with the Echelon, Lena and Will must race against time—and an automaton army—to stop the humanist plot before it’s too late. But as they fight to save a city on the brink of revolution, the greatest danger might just be to their hearts…
Review: (I read this one before I started my blog, so it is a super short review that I posted to Goodreads) Loved it! I can’t wait to read the next one. The characters are well developed, the plot is interesting and keeps you reading, the conflict is complex and fun. Love Lena and Will, love everything about the world McMaster has created.
“I WILL COME FOR YOU…”
He will find her no matter what. As a blue-blooded captain of the Nighthawk Guard, his senses are keener than most. Some think he’s indestructible. But once he finds the elusive Mercury, what will he do with her?
It’s his duty to turn her in—she’s a notorious spy and traitor. But after one stolen moment, he can’t forget the feel of her in his arms, the taste of her, or the sharp sting of betrayal as she slipped off into the night. Little does Mercury know, no one hunts better than the Nighthawk. And his greatest revenge will be to leave her begging for his touch…
Review: (Read and reviewed this on Goodreads before I started my blog) Lynch and Rosa are a dynamic couple. The cat and mouse game that Lynch is playing with Mercury (who happens to be Rosa and he doesn’t know it), and between Rosa (Lynch’s new secretary) and Lynch keep you entertained and at the edge of your seat. The struggle Rosa faces as she comes to know Lynch and realizes he isn’t like all of the rest of the Echelon draws you in and you worry along side her. When the truth finally comes out it breaks your heart as you see through Rosa’s eyes that she has lost him. His sense of betrayal, similar to what he went through years ago with Annabelle, makes you feel his struggle to come to terms with the fact that the women he loves isn’t who he thought she was. Even the underlying conflict between Rosa and her father is well written and captivating. Loved the story, just like the previous ones. This book’s conflict, I think, makes it a better read and a more well-rounded story. But just as with the previous installments, top notch story-telling and wonderful characters. I can’t wait to read more!
Synopsis: Friends, partners, and professionals… So just why is this case coming between them?
In a Victorian London ruled by the blood-drinking elite, Perry Lowell is a logical and accomplished Nighthawk: a rogue blue blood who tracks murderers and thieves for the Guild. So when she and her charming-but-reckless partner, Garrett, are charged with finding a missing theatre starlet, it should be a simple solve.
But with an entire theatre of suspects, including a flirtatious understudy and whispers of a Clockwork Menace haunting the place, tension is brewing between the pair of them. Can they come together to solve the case – or will it be too late, when the murderer turns his gaze on Perry herself?
Warning: This is not a traditional HEA. Set three years before Forged By Desire (available Sept 2014), it’s a pre-romance novella featuring Perry and Garrett. Heads will butt, tempers will flare – and perhaps one of them might come to realise just what the other truly means to them?
Review: (I read and reviewed the book before I started my blog, so this is super short) It was cute, but it was a tease. Makes me want to read Garret and Perry’s book more though, so it succeeded in keeping moving from one book to the next.
RITA ® FINALIST 2015
Synopsis:A FEAR SHE CAN’T ESCAPE
Nine years ago, Perry fled her thrall contract to find sanctuary among the Nighthawks. In that time, she’s become a respected member of the Guard, and she’s wanted Garrett Reed for as long as she can remember. But when a new case takes a chillingly familiar turn, Perry finds herself once again in the path of a madman…only this time, there’s nowhere left to run.
A DESIRE THAT CAN’T BE TEMPERED
Out of their depth and racing against time, Perry and Garrett must learn to trust the desire sparking between them…or risk losing themselves forever to the darkness stalking London’s streets.
Review: So good! Loved Perry and Garrett and loved reading how Perry finally (after 9 years) has Garrett. The story was entertaining, the conflict gripping, and the love story perfect. I love this author.
