top-ten-tuesday

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the Broke and the Bookish, is Top Ten Books Which Feature Characters Who Have Lost Someone (are musically inclined, have lost someone, have depression, who grow up poor, etc.)

Not all of the characters chosen, lose someone to death, some just lose someone for a period of time and win them back or discover them again later on in life (or centuries).

Here are my Top Ten for this week:

1. Vlad Tepesh

Night Prince Series, Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost

Vlad learned from his mistakes with his first, and only wife, and swore he would never open his heart to another woman ever again.  Enter Leila, a human who can absorb and emit electricity.  She enters his life and shows him that some women are strong enough to take on the Dark Prince of the Night, Dracula (though never call him that)

3.  Dylan Morrissey

Shifters Unbound by Jennifer Ashley

Dylan, ex-leader of the Austin, Texas Shiftertown, lost his mate long before the shifters took collars. He has three grown sons and a grandson, son to his 4th son who is deceased. Now his eldest son, Liam, runs the show, giving Dylan time to deal with the fact that he has feelings for the wolf next door, Glory.  For a while, he keeps her at a distance because he is still loyal to his mate, but after awhile, Glory has had enough of his uncertainty and wishy-washy behavior where she is concerned.  Losing Glory galvanizes Dylan into making a decision, and it helps that his sons fully support him finding happiness again.

4.  Reaver and Harvester

Demonica and Lords of Deliverance Series by Larissa Ione.

ReaverWARRIOR OF HEAVEN

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he’s agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before . . . to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

ANGEL OF HELL

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she’s doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan’s lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld’s darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape-her newfound thirst for an angel’s blood . . .

Reaver does not remember his past at all.  After a certain point (30 years ago or so), he draws a complete blank. Harvester doesn’t remember him either, but they both knew each other a long time ago, several thousand years ago. Reaver broke her heart when he believed that she had done something he saw as a betrayal (she kept a very big secret from him).  Now present times, they kind of hate each other. Harvester is the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse’s Sheol Watcher.  Reaver at one time was their Heavenly Watcher. They end up in Sheol (Hell) on a mission to stop Satan, and while on that mission grow unwillingly closer.  As they grow closer, his memories start to come back and he realizes that he cared for Harvester, before she fell.  Now it also comes out that she fell in order to spy, so she really isn’t “that bad”.  Anyway, as their story progresses, all of the secrets and their past are revealed and they fight to be together. There are a few tense moments, but I love this series, and really wish it didn’t have to end.

5. Demitri and Honor

Guild Hunter Series by Nalini Singharchangels blade us shadow

Demitri lost his wife and children long ago.  They were killed by vampires and he was made into one.  Thankfully the Archangel Raphael finds him and takes him in. Demitri from then on is a loyal assassin and confidant of Raphael.  He has never loved another woman like his dead wife and will not let another woman get that close.  Honor has been savaged by a brutal attack and is far too fragile for Demitri’s tastes, but they are thrown together to solve a crime and he cannot ignore his attraction to Honor.  I don’t want to give too much away, but this one is one of my favorites in the series (even more so than the ones about Raphael and Elena). There are some pleasant surprises and this one has one of those warm, happy endings that make you smile.

6. Talon (Speirr) and Sunshine (Nynia)

Night EmbraceDark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon

“Talon is the son of a Druid High Priest and Celtic Queen. He, himself, was a High Chieftain in Britain who fought back invaders and secured his clan against any and all threats. After the deaths of his aunt, uncle, wife and son over a short period of time, he was told that his ancient gods had cursed him. That they would plague his sister, his people and his lands so long as he lived. To appease the gods, he would have to be sacrificed to them. Once his clan had Talon secured to the altar, they killed his sister before his eyes and then turned on him. He gladly ceded his soul for revenge against them. Unlike the other Dark-Hunters, he is entirely detached from this world. Talon walks between this realm and the next with the help of Spirit Guides. There are those who speculate that should he ever free his banished emotions, the volatile Celtic blood  that flows through him will destroy not only him, but anyone near him.”

Sunshine is a quirky hippie character with surprises in her past that she doesn’t know about.  This is similar to Demitri and Honor’s story…but that is all I will say 😛
